 Thiruvathirakali is traditionally performed on the day of Thiruvathira in the Malayalam month of Dhanu (December-January). Women dance to the accompaniment of Thiruvathira paattu. The songs refer to Parvati’s longing for Lord Shiva.

Thiruvathirakkali staged by 5,211 dancers at Thanima, a cultural festival at Irinjalakuda, near here, has entered the Guinness Book of World Records.
